Fearful of the state of psych rock in the city after the unfortunate demise of Levitation Vancouver last year? Unless you’re about to embark on a farflung desert odyssey and write an acid-soaked album yourself, The Orange Kyte should assuage those fears a bit. On their new single Blue Ghosts, the Vancouver by-way-of Dublin band lay the sonic groundwork for a surreal trip through bandleader Stevie Moonboots’ mind. With shimmering shoegaze guitars, warm lo-fi garage production, and a rather majestic saxophone outro, “Blue Ghosts” is a welcome modern psychedelic taste of their upcoming LP The Orange Kyte Says Yes!, due in autumn. Taking an entirely different turn, the b-side of the single, “Melty Brains,” is an altogether more relaxed, droning affair more akin to the Brian Jonestown Massacre. With a promising single, The Orange Kyte show some real potential for their debut LP.
